In an interview with Rover,com, Juilliard graduate, concert pianist Lisa Spector, explained how she and her team of music experts created classical music arrangements specifically designed as calming music for dogs. In being a dog lover herself, Ms. Spector discovered that music can serve as a coping mechanism for dogs as it helps in reducing emotions that cause anxieties.
However, she explained that classical music pieces have broad ranges of multiple sounds and instrument arrangements. That is why there’s a big difference between the arrangements they designed for dogs and the traditional versions. Ms. Spector describes classical music for dogs as simplified versions that have been lowered in terms of tones. Mainly because lower frequencies have a calming effect on a dog’s nervous system. Musical sounds in low frequency can significantly slow down a dog’s heart beat at a rate of 40-60 beats per minute. The collection of classical music for dogs arranged by Ms. Spector and her team tend to make a listener go from active to passive mode of listening. This condition creates a calming effect because the energy level likewise slows down.
About Canine Reactions to High Frequency Sounds
It’s a widely known fact that the hearing sense of a dog is hundreds of times better than humans. Canines can hear higher-pitched sounds that average adult humans can’t hear at above 20,000 Hertz. The higher the Hertz frequency, the higher the pitch, which dogs hear from as high as 47,000 to 65,000 Hertz.
Obviously, being alone and at the same time hearing all sorts of sounds,cannot help soothe the feelings of anxiety creeping into a canine’s nervous system. Such hearing ability stems from their origins as shepherd dogs that can hear high-pitched sounds of predatory animals like wolves and animals of prey like small rodents.
